The first article is titled “Official: Tibetan areas closed to foreigners.” Near to the 50th anniversary of a failed uprising China is closing off the western part of the country to foreigners. Some areas include Gansu, Sichuan and Qinghai provinces. Some of the areas may open back up around March and April. It is believed that these areas are being closed now due to the fact that the uprisings anniversary is near and china does not want to be concerned with unrest. China also continues to prevent most reporters from entering the Tibetan areas. Although I do not know a lot about this topic, I do think that China is morally wrong for what they are doing to the Tibetan people. I believe it is understandable why they would not want foreigners to be there during a time of feared political unrest, but this also shows that something isn’t right. To only allow a few select reporters in under strict supervision is a little fishy too.
“Algeria’s Bouteflika Seeks Third Presidential Term” is about Bouteflika’s desire to run for elections on April 9, where is almost certain to win. He will be sure to win because his two main challengers are boycotting the poll due to an amendment being past 3 months ago allowing for a third term instead of two. He claims he wile fight against terrorism, create 3 million jobs and spend 150 million towards development. After 6 years in his own form of exile after being prime minister for 13 years he came back to run for president in 1999 and now there is no limit on how much longer he can run for president. I think that this situation is out of control, it seems as if it is a good formula for trouble in the future. Having a president having that much power is definitely not a good thing.
The third article I found at Yahoo’s new website is about Madagascar. The name of this article is “Madagascar forces retake government buildings.” Government ministry buildings were taken over by the leader of the supporters of opposition. In the process of the government’s retaking of the buildings 50 people were arrested but no one was hurt. Those who support the opposition claim that the current president is misspending funds and is also responsible for killing of 25 civilians in a police fire. In the past Madagascar has been separated into two governments due to opposition of the president. I though that this situation is nothing new. Especially since it has happened in the recent past. Governments always experience opposition. It is interesting that the opposition leader was able to take control of ministries even if it was for a short period of time. There will most likely be future turmoil in Madagascar.
